Brennan Johnson joins Crystal Palace in £35m move from Tottenham

Brennan Johnson, the hero of Tottenham’s Europa League win last season, has completed a £35 million transfer to Crystal Palace, marking the end of a short but impactful spell in north London. Six months after scoring the winning goal in the Europa League final, the 24-year-old Wales international now seeks a fresh start and more regular playing time.

Johnson joined Tottenham from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023 for around £47.5 million and quickly became a key figure under Ange Postecoglou. He scored 18 goals in his second season, including the decisive strike against Manchester United in the Europa League final, securing Spurs’ first European trophy in years. However, with Thomas Frank taking over as head coach, Johnson’s role diminished, leading to his move south.

Crystal Palace offers Johnson an opportunity to revive his career and add depth to their attack. Currently tenth in the Premier League, Palace hopes his pace, creativity, and goal-scoring ability will strengthen the squad ahead of challenging fixtures and provide an extra spark in European competition via the Conference League.

The Eagles’ attacking lineup, which has recently relied on Justin Devenny and Yeremi Pino behind main striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, will gain more flexibility with Johnson’s arrival, especially during absences like Ismaila Sarr’s Africa Cup of Nations duty.

For Palace, the signing represents a mix of proven talent and youthful energy. Johnson brings experience, dynamism, and the ability to make decisive contributions in key moments. As he begins this new chapter, the challenge will be to convert potential into consistent performances, helping Crystal Palace climb the Premier League table and make an impact in Europe.
