Flick orders two-day reset as pressure piles up on Barcelona

Barcelona players react after a late goal during an away league match.

Barcelona’s season has swung sharply in a matter of days. Barely a month after retaining the Supercopa de España with a 3–2 win over Real Madrid in Jeddah, they have hit a wobble.

Monday’s 2–1 defeat away to Girona on 16 February 2026 cost them top spot in LaLiga and dragged them back into a chase.

It was the kind of night that turns a title race. Lamine Yamal missed a first-half penalty, Pau Cubarsí headed Barcelona in front after the break, and Girona flipped it with a quick reply before Fran Beltrán struck late. Hansi Flick called it a poor defensive display and gave the squad two days off to reset mentally and physically.

The timing is brutal. Just four days earlier, Atlético Madrid ripped through Barcelona in a 4–0 Copa del Rey semi-final first leg, leaving a mountain to climb in the return at Spotify Camp Nou.

Off the pitch, the noise is rising too: Barcelona’s presidential election process is under way, with voting scheduled for 15 March 2026.
