Home defeat proves the final straw for the under-fire boss

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked head coach Thomas Frank after Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle United, a game settled by Jacob Ramsey’s late winner.

Frank, appointed in June 2025 on a contract running to 2028, departs with the club 16th in the Premier League — five points above the relegation zone — and on an eight-game winless league run. The loss left them on 29 points from 26 matches.

The board’s call follows a long slump: they have won only twice in their last 17 league games, with home form in particular becoming a regular flashpoint.

Europe offered a rare contrast, with the north London side reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, but they are already out of both domestic cups and the league slide never stopped.

Injuries and bans have been a constant backdrop. In club team news before the Newcastle match, absentees listed included James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Bergvall and Ben Davies. Captain Cristian Romero and left-back Destiny Udogie were also unavailable through suspension; Romero’s red card at Manchester United on 7 February triggered a four-match ban.

Sources told ESPN the club has not settled on a successor, with an interim appointment considered likely. Next up is the North London derby at home to Arsenal on 22 February.
