Chelsea confirmed on Thursday that they have parted ways with manager Enzo Maresca, just days before a crucial clash against Manchester City.
Maresca’s 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge comes to an end following a run of only one win in seven Premier League games, leaving the team fifth in the table. Sources, however, indicate that the main reason for the split was a breakdown in relations between the manager and the club’s hierarchy.
In an official statement, Chelsea said that “Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track,” avoiding the word “sacked.” Sources close to the club added that concerns arose from Maresca’s public displays of dissent and his behavior toward the club’s ownership.
His final game in charge was a 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth, during which he was booed by fans at Stamford Bridge and did not attend the post-match press conference.
During his time at Chelsea, Maresca guided the club back into the Champions League, finishing fourth in the Premier League, while also winning the Conference League and the inaugural Club World Cup. His contract was set to run until 2029, with the club holding an option for an additional year.
For the upcoming game against Manchester City, Chelsea has not confirmed who will take charge, but Willy Caballero is the likely interim manager. Long-term, Liam Rosenior of Strasbourg is reportedly a contender, while Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace is not being considered.
